Telemedicine and Its Areas of Application

Elfriede is 75 years old and lives alone in her large country house. Although she is still very fit and active, she has recently been suffering from low blood pressure and fatigue. So far, she has carefully documented her heart rate and blood pressure readings and presented her notes to her doctor. However, keeping written records for her increasingly frequent doctor visits has become an increasing burden for her. This is all the more true since she lives in the countryside and the journey to the family doctor’s practice is relatively long.

A friend and former nurse recommended the JAMES tablet and the vital sensors to her. The JAMES tablet is a device tailored to older people and designed for video calls and the recording of important health parameters. In combination with the vital sensors – a Bluetooth body scale and a blood pressure monitor – the JAMES tablet acts as a digital health coach. The readings captured by the vital sensors are transmitted directly to the tablet, where they can be accessed at any time. In addition, the video calling function enables medical online examinations. Thanks to JAMES, Elfriede no longer has to make the arduous journey she previously had to undertake for routine examinations. The tablet also reminds her to take important medication and is connected to the JAMES Care Center, where the nurse Michaela works.

In the Care Center, Michaela monitors the vital signs of up to 50 older people and contacts the patient and their relatives if the readings are abnormal. If Elfriede’s blood pressure drops significantly, she and her relatives are notified immediately and receive instructions on how to proceed.

Elfriede’s cousin Peter also uses the health functions of JAMES. Peter wears the JAMES B6 emergency watch, which not only serves as a mobile home emergency call device but also measures heart rate and blood pressure. As a nature lover, he goes on long walks and therefore checks his readings several times a day. The recorded data are then sent directly to the JAMES app, where his son Gerhard can monitor his father’s health.
